Ex-prisoners improve inmates’ education

The Crime Prevention and Reintegration of Ex-Offenders Association (CRROA) is stepping up to enhance inmates’ education and reduce recidivism by donating books to correctional facilities countrywide.

The association this week donated 140 literacy and numeracy books to Thaba-Tseka Correctional Institution. The institution which has 150 inmates currently offers education programme in which 23 inmates have already enrolled.

CRROA aims to supplement educational opportunities available at correctional institutions by allowing inmates to expand their knowledge and develop skills in classes as well as independently through reading and self-study.

Addressing the inmates during the handover ceremony, CRROA executive director, Nkalimeng Mothobi, said the books supplement existing educational resources and are expected to further improve the inmates’ access to learning and skills development.

Mothobi emphasised the importance of taking advantage of the opportunity for personal growth and rehabilitation.

“While you are in here, it is your chance to reflect on your past actions and make a commitment to change. Your time in here is an opportunity for individual initiative and by engaging with the resources and educational opportunities available, you can make your rehabilitation a success and meaningful journey.

“While you are in here, it is your chance to learn small projects that will assist you in creating jobs and opportunities for yourselves once you leave here. This is not just about rehabilitation, it is also about preparing you for a successful and productive life beyond the walls of this institution,” Mothobi noted.

CRROA has partnered with the ministry of education and training to ensure that when the inmates are released from correctional institutions, they can further their studies through the Lesotho Distance Teaching Centre.

Officer in charge of Thaba-Tseka, Senior Superintendent Theko Mabaso commended the ex-offenders’ association for their efforts.

He encouraged the inmates to make use of the books effectively and use the opportunity of having teachers around them without having to pay for their learning.

“Education is a key that can unlock many doors and it is now within your reach. Do not squander this chance to develop skills and knowledge that will serve you well both during and after your time in this area,” SSP Mabaso urged.

“We are grateful for the donation made by CRROA. The initiative helps to improve the lives of our inmates and also contributes to the betterment of our society as a whole. By providing our inmates with educational opportunities, we empower them to become productive members of society, which is beneficial to everyone.”

A teacher at the institution, Senate Lerothi shared her thoughts on the significance of the books and their contribution to the inmates.

She said the ability to read and write was essential for inmates to be able to fully engage and make the most of their time at the institution.

“As teachers, we are always looking for ways to engage our students and provide them with the best possible education. These books will be a valuable resource in helping us to achieve that goal.

“Education is not just about memorising facts and figures, but also about developing critical thinking skills and a love for learning. Reading will open up new worlds and perspectives to the inmates.

“It is important for inmates to understand the value of self-education and to make use of every opportunity available to them to improve their skills. The prison environment can be challenging and isolating, which can take a toll on an inmate’s mental health. However, education provides a sense of structure, purpose and accomplishment that can help inmates to cope with the stresses of prison life,” Senate said.
