The Digital Innovators Summit scheduled to begin later this month will go a long way towards enhancing digital literacy and combatting misinformation among students and media professionals in Lesotho, with the use of innovative artificial intelligence.

This bold prediction was made by the founder of online radio station Sky Alpha, Tello Leballo, this week at a press conference to announce the upcoming summit which is a flagship initiative that aims to re-enforce digital literacy, among others.

Support by the US Embassy, the summit also seeks to empower content creators, journalists, tertiary students, and influencers with the necessary AI tools and skills to navigate the complex digital landscape effectively.

It will address crucial topics, including automated fact-checking, sentiment analysis, and block chain integration, equipping participants with the knowledge to counter misinformation in their respective fields.

Leballo announced the latest developments regarding the summit, highlighting the radio station’s tireless efforts over the past few months to establish new partnerships that would enhance the program’s quality and value.

This strategic focus on collaboration has led to agreements with three prominent institutions – the National University of Lesotho, Botho University, and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.

These partnerships represent a significant milestone for the summit, as they aim to reach and engage a larger number of students across the country.

The summit will take place at Botho University on September 27, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology on October 11, and the National University of Lesotho on October 25.

“This carefully structured timeline is aimed at maximising participation and ensuring that students have ample opportunity to engage with the summit’s offerings. In an effort to provide diverse insights and perspectives, the summit will also expand its speaker line-up to include eight experts from various fields.

“This enhancement, made possible through the generous contributions of new partners, demonstrates the commitment to delivering a comprehensive and enriching experience for all attendees.

“Among the sponsors are the United States Embassy, LNIG, Hollard, and Lesotho Revenue Services, all of whom recognize the importance of fostering digital literacy and innovation in the region,” Lebalo said.

At the same occasion, the US Embassy’s public affairs officer, Charles Blake, expressed the US government’s pride in its partnership with the Digital Innovators Summit.

Blake emphasised that digitalisation and innovation are essential keys to the future, and the US seeks to collaborate with global partners engaged in this vital space.

He noted the importance of ensuring that young people grow up in an environment conducive to global interaction, idea generation, and creativity.

“Lesotho is a prime location for fostering such change, and the US government is eager to be part of this transformative journey.

“The summit will focus on the role of artificial intelligence in today’s world, discussing its potential applications and the significant impact it can have on various sectors.

“This emphasis on AI underscores the summit’s commitment to preparing participants for a future where technology plays a pivotal role in shaping society,” he added.
