New bridges mark LHWP Phase II milestone

The opening of the Khubelu and Mabunyaneng bridges in Mokhotlong has marked a major milestone in Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), ensuring continued access for communities affected by the future Polihali Reservoir.

Minister of Natural Resources Mohlomi Moleko officially opened the two bridges at the Mabunyaneng Bridge site in Mapholaneng on Friday, alongside South African Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina.

The Khubelu Bridge is a 270-metre curved structure comprising nine 30-metre spans and standing 25 metres above the valley floor. Mabunyaneng Bridge stretches 120 metres across the valley, with four 30-metre spans and a height of 12 metres.

Both bridges provide two-way vehicle and pedestrian access and are expected to maintain year-round connectivity to Mokhotlongacross the future Polihali Reservoir.

Majodina said the bridges replace existing crossings that will be inundated following the impoundment of the Polihali Reservoir.

“Bridges bring people together, bring safety and renew the economy within the country,” Majodina said.

Moleko said the completion of the bridges represented an important milestone, stressing that infrastructure projects should bring lasting benefits to communities.

“Major infrastructure investments must leave behind more than concrete and steel,” Moleko said, highlighting skills transfer, economic opportunities and stronger community participation in development.
