Standard Bank, Forestry celebrates tree planting day

Standard Lesotho Bank has celebrated National Tree Planting Day in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Under the global theme ‘Forests and Economies,’ the event held on Friday underscores the vital link between ecological health and national prosperity.

According to a media statement from Standard Lesotho Bank, the initiative successfully saw the planting of 54,000 trees across the country.

To ensure the long-term success of this reforestation effort, the bank has pledged M250,000 over the next three years.

“These seedlings represent more than just greenery; they are symbols of growth, resilience, and a commitment to a sustainable future for Lesotho,” the statement noted.

Speaking during the event, His Majesty King Letsie III expressed his profound gratitude to all participants for their hard work and dedication. 

He emphasised the shift in this year’s initiative toward planting fruit trees in addition to indigenous species.

“I was very happy today to see that we are not only planting forest trees, but we have returned to planting fruit trees. This is a matter that pleases me, and I believe it pleases you as well, because from these fruit trees, we will get good fruits throughout the coming years, food that is healthy for our children’s bodies and minds. Let us continue with the spirit of planting trees, and let us ensure that once planted, we protect them so they may grow and benefit our nation,” he urged.

Representing Standard Lesotho Bank,Keketso Makara said their mandate is to transform the lives of Basotho through various initiatives. 

“It is our responsibility to roll up our sleeves and plant for the future, ensuring real change starts from the ground up to grow stronger communities,” Makara added.
